Now Available: Data Driven Services with Silverlight 2!
Thursday, December 18 2008 - book, silverlight
Today I saw the first copies of my book in print, hot off the presses. So where can you get it?
- You can purchase the ebook today from O’Reilly’s site
- You can buy the print version of the book also from O’Reilly’s site
- You can purchase it from Amazon, who will be receiving my book in the next few days (obviously O’Reilly gets it first)
Very soon, I will be creating an online area for the book at www.silverlight-data.com where you can find the code samples in both C# and VB, updates to the book, additional materials as I put them out, and various other book related topics. www.silverlight-data.com will be the goto place for any updates for the book. This should be up before the end of the year. If code samples need to be updated at some point, I will make adjustments online. Of course, code samples will be available from www.silverlight-data.com and from O’Reilly’s site, too.
For now, you can find the code samples for the book in my l
inks section. Just go to www.silverlight-data.com and scroll down on the right hand site and look for “Links”. You see it listed in there.
I’m just thrilled that its finally out! I hope you all enjoy it, and if you do, please express your thoughts in a review on Amazon, O’Reilly’s site or in your own blog :-)
Thanks to everyone who helped with the book!

In this issue: David Wynne, Damon Payne, Nigel Sampson, Jeff Prosise, Ning Zhang, and Terence Tsang.
In the DiggServices example, the reference in DiggServicesTestPage.html (fwlink/?LinkID=115261) need to be updated as it points to an earlier version of Silverlight. So far, it's been a great read! Thanks.
Jun ... Thanks for the heads up on that. I will fix it, test it and repost the code tonight! I'm glad you like it so far, too.
Congratulations! Well done, good and faithful servant. It just arrived from Amazon. Merry Christmas (not reading it until after Christmas <g>)! And a happy data-driven New Year...
Finished the book! I highly recommend this book to anyone doing (or wanting to do) LOB apps involving Silverlight 2. Ch. 5/6's treatment of SOAP apps w/ASMX&WCF was well-written. Ch. 7-9 examples - digg, Amazon, and twitter - gave good coverage of RESTful services. I skimmed over Ch. 10 - RSS/Atom - because I wanted to focus on Ch. 11 - ADO.NET Data Services and Entity Framework. I was certainly not disappointed. Overall, this is a great book! Examples of how LINQ to SQL/XML/JSON works + WCF/REST are worth the book's price.
Hey John, Congrats man!
Just ordered your books and can't wait to read it.
..Ben
And Happy New Year!
Great book! I downloaded it from Oreillys last night.
However I got double charged >:<
Thanks guys! Glad you like it.
Chris ... make sure you tell O'Reilly about that. I'm sure they can fix it.
Jun ... I updated the code samples on my web site today. It includes some minor changes, including the fixes to the issue you pointed out here where some HTML files referenced silverlight-2-b2. I changed them to say silverlight-2 instead.

Congratulations man, im really happy to see you finally get this baby out the door :)
